Deputy Economy and Industry Minister Doncho Barbalov said here on Monday that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are driving Europe’s green and digital transition. “In today's dynamic business environment, these enterprises must be flexible, innovative and efficient in order to stay competitive and achieve sustainable growth," he added. Barbalov was speaking at an event organized by the Bulgarian Accreditation Service Executive Agency to mark its professional holiday and World Accreditation Day.

During the event mottoed “Accreditation in Support of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises,” Barbalov highlighted the key role accreditation plays in supporting economic development. He noted that accreditation facilitates the exchange of goods and services. The main objective is to protect the end consumer so that they are sure of the quality they receive," the Deputy Minister said.

In his words, building a climate-neutral, resource-efficient, and flexible circular economy, as well as increasing sustainability, requires the active involvement of SMEs. Certifications such as ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 contribute to improved consumption and energy efficiency, lower costs, and reduced environmental impact, Barbalov said.

He praised the Bulgarian Accreditation Service for its work and its objective, independent, and impartial approach that helps it enhance efficiency, ensure quality, and promote innovation. The agency's success in establishing accreditation as an increasingly important activity that guarantees security and confidence in the goods and services offered on the market is undeniable, the Deputy Minister added.

Barbalov concluded by saying that the Economy and Industry Ministry would remain an active partner and would always offer support in addressing challenges.

The event was also attended by representatives of the State Agency for Metrological and Technical Surveillance, the Union of Metrologists in Bulgaria, and the Bulgarian Institute of Metrology, among others.
